Authorities Investigate Mass Fish Die-Off at Tema Shipyard

A joint investigation is underway following the discovery of a significant number of dead fish at the Tema Shipyard earlier this week.
In a joint statement released Thursday, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the Fisheries Commission, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the mortality event was first detected by security personnel between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM on April 6, 2026.
The Incident
The dead fish were found concentrated within a 50-meter radius of the shipyard's main unloading ramp. Following the discovery, a rapid-response team consisting of FDA inspectors, police officers, and port officials secured the site.
While the exact cause of the die-off remains unknown, officials stated there is currently no evidence of deliberate sabotage or an immediate, widespread health emergency. Investigators have collected between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with water samples, which have been sent for priority laboratory testing under strict chain-of-custody protocols.
Public Health Advisory
To ensure public safety while the investigation continues, authorities have issued the following directives:
Consumption Warning: Members of the public are strictly advised not to harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or adjacent areas until an official "All-Clear" notice is issued.
Cooking Standards: Fish sourced from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 63°C.
Reporting: Any sightings of dead or distressed fish should be reported immediately to the FDA Hotline at 0551 112 224/5 or the nearest FDA office.
Medical Guidance
Health officials urge anyone who has consumed fish from the area and is experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or skin irritation to seek medical attention immediately. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about the potential exposure.
The four agencies emphasized that further updates will be provided as laboratory results become available and encouraged the public to rely solely on official channels for information.
