ECOWAS Congratulates Senegal on AFCON 2025 Triumph

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has congratulated Senegal following the country’s victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the achievement as a source of pride for both Senegal and the wider West African region.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ECOWAS Commission praised the Senegalese national team, the Lions of Teranga, for securing the continental title through what it described as discipline, commitment and collective effort by players, technical staff and football authorities.

Senegal clinched the title with a 1–0 victory over host nation Morocco in the final played on Sunday in Rabat. The match, which ended goalless in regulation time, was decided in extra time after a tightly contested encounter that drew widespread attention across the continent.
The Commission acknowledged the intensity of the final, noting that Senegal’s performance reflected both tactical resilience and competitive maturity at the highest level of African football.
ECOWAS described the triumph as extending beyond a single national achievement, highlighting its symbolic importance for West Africa as a whole. According to the Commission, Senegal’s success demonstrates the unifying role of sport in fostering social cohesion, inspiring youth and strengthening regional identity.

“The ECOWAS Commission welcomes this exceptional success, which illustrates the vital role of sport in promoting unity, social cohesion and hope among Africa’s youth,” the statement said, reaffirming the bloc’s commitment to supporting sports development as a tool for regional integration and sustainable development.
The AFCON 2025 victory further consolidates Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s leading football nations, reflecting sustained investment in player development, coaching and football infrastructure over recent years.
As celebrations continue in Dakar and across the country, regional leaders view the win as a reminder of sport’s capacity to bridge borders and reinforce shared African aspirations.
