ECOWAS Lifts All Sanctions Against Guinea

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted all remaining sanctions imposed on Guinea following the military coup in 2021.
The decision was taken by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government after a summit held on Wednesday January 28, 2026 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
In a statement signed by ECOWAS Chair and President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, the bloc said the sanctions are no longer necessary following the successful completion of Guinea’s political transition.
According to ECOWAS, the presidential election held in December 2024 and the subsequent legal transfer of power have created an environment conducive to the restoration of democratic governance and respect for the rule of law in the country.
“All sanctions taken against the Republic of Guinea in the context of facilitating the restoration of constitutional order are hereby lifted,” the statement said.
ECOWAS initially suspended Guinea and imposed sanctions after the military takeover in September 2021. However, the bloc noted that the measures have now “become irrelevant” following the conclusion of the transition process.
The decision clears the way for Guinea’s full reintegration into ECOWAS decision-making bodies.
The regional bloc has urged the Guinean government to intensify efforts to consolidate democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as the country moves forward.
