Ghana to host high-level reparatory justice conference after UN resolution

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana has announced that Ghana will host a High-Level Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice from June 17 to 19, 2026, in Accra.

The conference follows a landmark resolution by the United Nations General Assembly declaring the Trans-Atlantic enslavement of Africans as a crime against humanity.

Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as the African Union Champion for Reparations, the event aims to translate global momentum into concrete action.

The resolution, backed by 123 UN member states, is widely seen as a turning point in the global push for justice, recognition, and structured reparatory engagement.

According to the Ministry, the Accra conference will bring together heads of state, policymakers, academics, and activists to develop a coordinated framework for advancing the reparations agenda.

Discussions will focus on transforming the UN resolution into actionable policies, while strengthening collaboration between African nations and the global diaspora.

A key highlight will be a historic Juneteenth commemoration at Christiansborg Castle, a site deeply linked to the history of trans-Atlantic slavery. The event is expected to serve as a moment of reflection, remembrance, and renewed commitment to justice.

The conference is also expected to produce policy recommendations and long-term strategies to guide engagement at both continental and global levels.

Authorities say the initiative will reinforce Africa’s collective voice on reparatory justice while building sustained international partnerships to advance the cause.
