Mahama’s France Visit Yields Gains in Bilateral Cooperation, Global Health, and Reparatory Justice

President Mahama is in Paris, France for high-level diplomatic engagements that are already shaping Ghana’s foreign policy outlook across trade, global health, and historical justice.

The visit, which includes bilateral talks with French President and participation in multilateral forums, is being positioned as a strategic effort to deepen Ghana–France relations while advancing broader international priorities.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

At the centre of the visit are discussions aimed at expanding cooperation between Ghana and France across key sectors. Engagements at the Élysée Palace have focused on infrastructure development, agriculture, aviation, education, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Security cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism within the West African sub-region, also featured prominently in the talks, reflecting shared concerns over regional stability.

Officials indicate that both sides are working toward translating these discussions into practical agreements that will enhance trade flows, investment, and technical collaboration.

Elevating Ghana’s Role in Global Health diplomacy

President Mahama also participated in the 2026 One Health Summit in Lyon, where he joined global leaders in addressing interconnected challenges spanning public health, food systems, and environmental sustainability.

In his interventions, the President underscored the need for stronger international cooperation and reforms to global health systems, positioning Ghana as an active contributor to shaping policy responses to emerging health threats.

The summit provided a platform for Ghana to reinforce its diplomatic presence within multilateral health governance frameworks while advocating coordinated global action.

Reparatory Justice Gains Diplomatic Traction

A key dimension of the visit has been the inclusion of reparatory justice in bilateral discussions. France has signalled openness to engage Ghana on issues linked to the transatlantic slave trade, including the return of cultural artefacts and collaboration on historical research.

The development aligns with Ghana’s ongoing leadership in global reparations advocacy and reflects a growing willingness among European partners to address historical injustices within contemporary diplomatic relations.

As discussions continue, attention will turn to the concrete outcomes of the visit, particularly in terms of formal agreements and long-term policy alignment between Ghana and France.
