Xi to Host Putin as China Signals Stability After Trump Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to welcome Russian leader Vladimir Putin for a two-day state visit, coming just days after former U.S. President Donald Trump concluded a high-profile trip to Beijing.

The meeting is being framed by both Beijing and Moscow as a reaffirmation of their long-standing strategic ties, with officials describing the relationship as an “all-weather” partnership. Putin’s latest trip—his 25th to China—underscores the consistency of cooperation between the two nations despite growing geopolitical pressure.

China is using the visit to reinforce its image as a steady global actor at a time of rising uncertainty driven by ongoing conflicts, trade disputes, and disruptions in global energy markets. While Beijing has positioned itself as neutral in the Ukraine war and a potential mediator, it continues to maintain close economic and diplomatic ties with Moscow.

During the visit, discussions are expected to include expanded energy cooperation, as Russia looks to deepen trade with China amid continued Western sanctions.

The summit also follows Trump’s recent engagement with Chinese leadership, which produced limited concrete agreements but emphasized stability in U.S.-China relations. Beijing appears keen to contrast its consistent diplomatic posture with what it portrays as shifting Western strategies.

Analysts suggest the Xi-Putin meeting sends a clear signal that attempts to weaken China-Russia relations are unlikely to succeed. They argue that Beijing is unlikely to pressure Moscow significantly over the war in Ukraine, given the strategic importance of the partnership.

China is expected to continue offering diplomatic backing and economic support to Russia while balancing its messaging to global partners, particularly in the West, as it navigates its role as both a major economic power and geopolitical player.
